Teaching law in STAPS: A challenge?

By Jean-Christophe Lapouble

Law is a separate discipline within the field of STAPS. In fact, the particularities of the discipline and the fact that it is a secondary subject in the various diplomas contribute to marginalizing the discipline, even though there is no doubt about the need to teach it. It’s true that most of the time only sports law, whose scope is ill-defined, is taught. Paradoxically, no one disputes the usefulness of such courses, even though the discipline is not recognized. We therefore need to look at the fundamentals of the legal field, as well as learning methods, in order to make the discipline more attractive to students and more useful for professional integration. The study of practical cases would seem to be a good method, insofar as the teacher has the necessary hindsight to situate a case in a more global context, thus avoiding the simple narration of anecdotes. In terms of the subjects taught, while the organization of the sports system (which is also a matter for sociology) cannot of course be ignored, the question of liability seems to be a must. Finally, for students who specialize in management, the various legal issues involved in marketing seem to be essential.
