A Philippe Néaumet collection at the French National Archives
General secretary of the Union of Physical Education and Sports Teachers from 1956 to 1969, Philippe Néaumet (1917–2002) was, as the main representative in discussions with public authorities under the Gaullist Republic, undeniably a key figure in the history of physical education in the twentieth century. His contributions merit closer study, especially since they have been largely overlooked in the collective memory of physical education teachers. A collection of his archives will soon be available at the National Archives of the World of Work (ANMT), and his remarkable personal library on sport and physical education can already be consulted at the Collex-certified library of the Faculty of Sports Science and Physical Education (UFR STAPS) in Orsay. Whether focused on biographical research or on the history of physical education, sports science, sport, the National Union for Physical Education (SNEP), or the French Section of the Workers’ International (SFIO), future studies can now draw on these first-hand sources, which cover a long period and are sufficiently diverse to support the construction of an explanatory history combining sociological, anthropological, semiological, political, economic, and cultural approaches, among others.
